I would like to welcome you to my Practice website. My name is Tamara Bonfante and I am an independent midwife based in Harlow, Essex. I am a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, a member of the Royal College of Midwives and of the Independent Midwives Association. I am highly motivated and committed to providing you with the highest standard of personalised maternity care structured around your individual maternity needs.

My role is to support you throughout your pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. The welcoming of a new baby into your life is the biggest transition you will ever make. With the enormity of this magnificent event in mind, my care is designed to enable you and your partner to delight in and appreciate every beautiful moment of your pregnancy and birth to the full and to make the transition into parenthood as gentle and beautiful as possible.

I am positive that in your own mind you have created expectations surrounding your pregnancy and birth. To fulfil these expectations it is essential to have a relationship of complete trust with your midwife with whom you have had the opportunity to develop a bond over the course of your pregnancy. In the under-staffed and under-funded NHS system you will almost certainly not see the same midwife more than once during your antenatal visits. If you have a long labour, you may have as many as three or four different midwives whom you have never met before taking over your care at the change of shift. The anxiety of having strangers care for you in such a vulnerable and delicate time has the potential of adding immense stress to what is a highly intense experience.

Throughout your pregnancy we will get to know each other intimately and build a bond of trust. The care that I offer you in both your pregnancy and at the birth of your baby will be in harmony with your wants. When we first meet at your initial consultation, we will discuss all matters relating to your pregnancy. I will advise you what antenatal tests are available to you and the reason for these tests. All the information that I give you will be evidence based. Having this knowledge, you will be well equipped to make informed choices about what tests and interventions you want and which ones you feel are unnecessary. This is a time where your needs are paramount. My role is to ensure that your wants and choices are provided for whilst maintaining the safest possible environment for you and your baby.

All of your antenatal and postnatal care will be in your own home. If you wanted, we could even schedule a couple of the antenatal visits for the evening so that your partner could be there as well. No more long waits in crowded waiting rooms to be attended to by a stranger.

I mainly offer home births but should you wish to consider a hospital birth, I am happy to accompany you to hospital as your birthing advocate.
